A 16-year-old was arrested Monday in the deadly shooting of a Gaston woman that happened over the weekend in Columbia. And police said the murder was gang-related.
Mr. Deante Dominic-Ali Wittich will be tried as an adult for the murder of Ms. Amanda F. McKenzie, according to Columbia police.
Ms. McKenzie, 22, of 151 Pine Turn Lane, died at 3:36 p.m. Sunday from a gunshot wound to the head, Richland County Coroner Mr. Gary Watts said.
The shooting happened around 1 a.m. on West Campanella Drive, police said.
Investigators said the woman was a passenger in a vehicle when she was shot in the head.
“The male driver tells investigators that the pair was driving along West Campanella when he heard gunfire, and saw the female critically injured,” Ms. Timmons said
He called 911 and the woman was transported to a local hospital where she died.
The teen was arrested at the Arrington Place apartments located on Van Heise Street, Ms. Timmons said.
“While CPD Investigators continue to determine a motive, they do believe this shooting was gang-related, stemming from a previous altercation,” she said.
Police have not released any details on the prior incident.
"This case is yet another example of how gangs destroy lives,” Interim Chief Ruben Santiago said. “Gang members think they will become notorious by committing crimes when in reality they face significant prison time."
