A teen was allegedly driving under the influence when police said he caused a wreck that injured five members of an Athens family, including a 1-year-old girl.
Mr. Nathaniel Edwards, 19, of Nicholson, was arrested and charged with DUI, underage possession and consumption of alcohol and three counts of serious injury by vehicle in the wreck that happened about 8 p.m., according to the Athens-Clarke County police department.
Investigators said Mr. Eduviges Ortiz, 23, was driving a 2007 Toyota Corolla south bound on North Avenue when he attempted to turn left onto Old Hull Road.
He never completed that turn.
His vehicle was struck in the passenger side by a north bound 1991 Volvo 240 driven by Mr. Edwards, police spokeswoman Ms. Hilda Sorrow said.
Mr. Ortiz and his passengers, Isaac Cruz Ortiz, 14; Alicia Dejesus Munioz Ortiz, 12; Alejandra Munoz Ortiz, 12, and Elena Lugo, 1, all of Lombardy Circle, were transported to Athens Regional Medical Center, Ms. Sorrow said.
Their conditions were not readily available Thursday.
