An innocent bystander was killed and some children injured in a shootout Monday night in a neighborhood in Austell, police said.
And police have charged a 17-year-old in the shooting.
The incident happened shortly before 8:40 p.m. on Oakhill Circle, according to Cobb County police.
Investigators said it began as a fight between two women and quickly escalated into a gun battle when two males joined in.
“Shots were fired between the males and an innocent bystander was killed,” police spokesman, Sgt. Dana Pierce said. “Both males fled, one in a car and the other on foot.”
Some children were also injured by shrapnel and the concrete being hit, Sgt. Pierce said.
Police declined to release how many children were injured, but said their wounds were not life-threatening.
Police have identified the deceased victim as Ms. Deidre Smith, 47, of Austell.
The teen, Mr. Khalil Kelly, was charged with felony murder and aggravated assault, police said.
He remained in the Cobb County jail Tuesday without bond. Police decline to say why the women were arguing.
