Jonathan Aguiluz, 14, was charged as an adult today with first-degree murder in the death of his baby sister, Larissa Yanes. The tragic incident occurred at the home of the siblings in Montgomery County, Md. on Thursday, Feb. 7.
According to the Montgomery Co. Police Department, the children’s mother, Gloria Yanes, went to work Thursday night and left her son Johnathan to babysit his 7-month-old sister Larissa. The mom had to be gone overnight.
In Md., 14-year-old siblings can babysit their younger brothers or sisters under “normal circumstance.”
But sometime during the night, baby Larissa started crying and wouldn’t stop. Big brother ended up killing his sister in an effort to make her stop crying.
Later, investigators discovered that the baby had suffered injuries to the upper portions of her body.
“He admitted to causing those injuries and also placing his hands over her mouth and nose as she was crying,” says Captain Paul Starks of the Montgomery County Police. ~ WJLA
When the mom returned in the early morning hours and checked on the baby around 5:30 a.m., she thought the infant was sleeping.
Around 6:00 a.m. when the mom tried to awaken the baby for a feeding, she realized something was deadly wrong.
After calling emergency rescue who transported the infant to a local hospital, 7-month-old Larissa Yanes was pronounced deceased at 6:45 a.m.
“She never even had a chance at life,” says Brian McCoy, a neighbor. “[It’s] really a shame and now it’s really two lives taken away. The 14-year-old just lost his life, too.”
