According to an August 19, 2013 story in the Dallas Morning News, Texas Sen. Ted Cruz released his birth certificate. As many “birther” conspiracy theorists have suspected, it proves that Cruz was born in Canada. But, it also proves, as most Constitutional scholars have maintained, that the Texas senator is a natural born American as it reveals that his mother was an American citizen, having been born in Wilmington, Delaware.
The revelation should put to rest the entire Ted Cruz birther issue. Indeed Hot Air suggests that Cruz was having a little fun, highlighting what many believe is a non issues in advance of a possible run for the presidency.
However the issue of dual citizenship has now been raised. Some legal scholars are now maintaining that Cruz is both American and Canadian according to the law in the two countries. Cruz can renounce his Canadian citizenship, if in fact he has one, and it might be wise if he chooses to run for president.
On the other hand, it raises the intriguing possibility, if only as a light night joke, that should American politics not work out for Cruz he could always move to Canada and run for prime minister.
