Rich Lowry, writing for Politico in an August 22, 2013 piece, refers to Sen. Ted Cruz as a “traitor to his class” a sly reference to the accusation once heaped upon Franklin Delano Roosevelt. However the class that Cruz has committed treason against is the liberal intellectual class and not the old money class of FDR’s day.
“One of the left’s deepest prejudices is that its opponents are stupid, and Cruz tramples on it. Chris Hayes of MSNBC actually says he fears Cruz’s brilliance.”
To be sure the left could still think George W. Bush, just as Ivy League as Cruz, was a dunce because he talked funny. Of course Ronald Reagan and Sarah Palin barely had two brain cells between them, according to the poobahs on the left. Never mind that both of them possessed the native cunning worthy of a Machiavelli
But they can’t claim with any credibility that Cruz is stupid. He was a champion debater at Princeton and an honor student at Harvard Law. How it was that Cruz did not become a reliable liberal after all that indoctrination escapes many people on the left.
This complicates the task of destroying Cruz before he does something really alarming, like run for president. He is already frightening people of both parties in the Senate. What he might do in the Oval Office does not bear thinking about.
To be sure, as Lowry notes, Cruz’s drive to defund Obamacare is considered the heights of hubris by the establishment, but it is winning him support among the electorate, which may be the point of the effort.
Is Ted Cruz too intelligent to be stopped? It could be and that has certain people very afraid.
