According to a Dec. 8 YouTube post from Invicta FC, Invicta FC strawweight champ Carla Esparza and 115-pound title contender Tecia Torres both opened up about a potential fight between them during the Invicta FC 7 post-fight press conference.
Esparza raised some eyebrows by calling out Torres immediately after "The Tiny Tornado" defeated Felice Herrig at the event, and she discussed at the post-fight presser why she would do such a thing.
"I'll admit that the call out was a little bit personal," Esparza said at the Invicta FC 7 post-fight presser. "But you know, hopefully that fight happens. And I think either way, down the line it'll happen. What can I say? Felice is one of my best friends. She's like my sister. So you know I want to come in and.. the fight didn't go her way tonight, but what can I say? I want to bring a little blood to Tecia's face, you know?
"I mean that's the truth of the matter. I respect her as a fighter, it's no disrespect. But that's how I feel. I want to go in there and do that."
Torres admits being a bit surprised to get called out by Esparza, but she took it in stride.
"Tonight is about Felice," Torres said at the Invicta FC 7 post-fight presser. "I feel honored that she would come and ask me to fight her. That shocked me a little bit, but I understand that's her best friend or whatnot. I'd want to beat on a little bit somebody that beat up my best friend. I'll talk to Shannon and we'll see what's up.
"I have to talk to my team and my management and we'll see what we want. I'm only 4-0. If we don't meet now, we'll meet down the road. I'm cool with it. We'll get some blood one day."
Torres says she'll fight Esparza when the time is right and that she's in no rush for a title shot.
"I don't call out people," Torres said.
"When my mind tells me its ready, I'll fight you. I'm in no rush for the title. I'm just taking it as it goes. I'm still young. I'm only 4-0. It it comes and we like it, then we'll take it."
Torres was surprised that Esparza called her out because she knows Scottish phenom Joanne Calderwood is a legit top five contender, so she thought perhaps "Cookie Monster" would have had her sights set on her instead.
"I was kind of confused," Torres said of Esparza's call out. "I was like 'Who is she calling out? Is she calling out me? I'm like 'What about Joanne?' Cuz I like Joanne. I think she's 8-0 or 9-0 now, so I think she's closer to the belt than me and deserves it. But we'll take it as it goes and if the offer comes, we'll think about it. I'm in no rush."
