It is a tragic sort of irony that led the electronic dance music world into a mountainous pile of mediocrity. To put it simple: technology killed EDM. Now, many argue that EDM is stronger than ever and that there is nothing to fear. In this writer's opinion however, the EDM world just is not the same. There are too many DJ's and producers that flood the stations with music and it has quickly turned into a homogenized mess. Social media has made it entirely possible for one producer to be the toast of the town one night and then completely forgotten the next. Factor that in with others that spend most of their time imitating other pre-established artists and then it adds up to be a grey messy pile of goo that cannot yield anymore colorful wonderful product.
So what else led EDM to this sad state? Demand for new tracks as dubstep became the hot genre was high for years. This led to not only independent producers with a laptop to give it a go but also led to major radio DJ's to play said independent DJ's track on normal broadcast hours. This isn't to say that every independent producer has a lack of creativity or skill because there certainly are many with that kind of talent, this just allowed those without some attention and perhaps too much attention.
Advertisers played a role in the assassination of the great days of EDM. Countless commercials featuring a dubstep or house track were rushed into production so that the target audience of college age adults, and maybe a little older, could be reached with cars, sports drinks, and even breakfast cereals! The music, let's face it, is cheap and easy to make. That in combination with it's high demand made a simple equation for advertisers to make money.
So now, how will the EDM world be fixed? It's certainly a hard question to answer but there is a way. The big theme around all of the problems that the EDM world faces right now is creativity. Creativity stems from a combination of previously made things and turning it into something entirely new. So all the EDM world has to do is wait for the hot new combination that will set the world on fire again. Who knows? Maybe something like melodic death fusion? Or liquid progressive swing?
