Technology changes the movie business

Technology has revolutionized the film industry and as far back as 2008 some amazing trends were taking place in the way films were shot, its post production and in the editing rooms.  The public noticed James Cameron put his entire career at risk with the Oscar-winning movie and 3-D making of Avatar (2009).

Not only were cameras more portable, less expensive, but the high definition digital quality on the smaller cameras was technically flawless. And editing was another story thanks to the Internet.

For example. Belgian film director, writer and producer, Daniel Maze, Maze Productions shot the movie CORNERED all on location in downtown Los Angeles at a mom and pop convenience store. The award-winning comedy-horror film was edited via the Internet thousands of miles away in an elaborate studio in Brussels, Belgium, a 10th-century fortress town of one million people. Maze made his first film at age 11 and in 2006 MAZEfilms became the first Belgian production company to raise money from private investors and then shoot a feature-length movie in Hollywood, CA.

The movie, starring Steve Guttenberg, James Duvall, Eduardo Antonio Garcia, Elizabeth Nicole and Ellia English is about a nightly poker game, where a group of lowlifes are terrorized in their own convenience store by a masked killer.  It was written and directed by Daniel Mazewith Writer Darrin Grimwood (screenplay) and produced by Saskia Boedt.

Hollywood moviemaking technology has lowered the cost of making movies, and it opened the doors for more filmmakers globally to compete in film festivals and expose their work Online.

The 14th Annual ARPA International Film Festival in Hollywood, CA recently featured several international movies including the much talked about “I am Neda,” a film drama based on the true story of a woman in Iran who fearlessly pursues the cause of freedom in defiance of tyranny and oppression.

It was written, produced and directed by Nicole Sadighi and received rave reviews. At the premiere Sadighi was about the business of making movies and how technology has changed the film business. Sadighi who produced, directed and acted in the short 20 minute film said she would rather have someone else direct movie so she can concentrate on details of the story. Also at the film festival at the Egyptian Theater, Hollywood Producer Robert David Deranian, PhD., of Salient Clear was at the premiere of his documentary KOMITAS". The film is about a talented Armenian man, Komitas, who was a priest, singer, choice director, composer, musicologist and music pedagogue who witnessed the Genocide.(ROBERT DERANIAN (video)

Deranian is also working on another movie with the Genocide, too, called “Red Harves”t that is expected to be ready in 2012.

Also at the premiere was Comedian Brian Vermeire. He said, not only has technology of making the movie gotten better, but so has the social media to promote a film. Youtube: BRIAN VERMEIRE (video)

“I am Neda”Producer and Actress Kristina Hughes agreed, adding that technology has taken the movie business to a whole new level. Youtube: KRISTINA HUGHES (Video)

Hughes is founder of the Performertrack, Holden Log, LLC, Los Angeleswhich logs, tracks and helps actors and directors market and promote their films and careers Online.

While advancement of technology in Hollywoodhas improved the overall moviemaking business, it has also had a few setbacks, too. Piracy costs millions annually and the unions continue to fight over Internet issues, the royalties and percentage SAG /WGAmembers should receive via sales Online, a whole new adventure in the business movie making and its technology.
