We are well into the new school year, and some parents may have already encountered a new diagnosis of ADHD in their child. Parents with children who have disabilities on the autism spectrum know all too well that ADHD is sometimes difficult to manage, even with the best educational climates in the classroom. Parents with children who have ADHD need all of the resources that are available to help their child succeed in school
Sarasota is fortunate to have an educational center that specializes in children with ADHD and other disabilities that are included in the autism spectrum. Beyond the Spectrum Education Center offers three programs for children in pre-kindergarten through 12th grade. The Monarch Academy is one program that is part of Beyond the Spectrum Education Center. This is an elementary program which follows the Florida state standards for providing individualized education for children with ADHD. This program focuses on developing social skills with a hands-on curriculum. Team-building is an important part of this program. The Little Caterpillar class at the center is a low-ratio class that offers individualized curriculum for young children. The Mariposa Peogram at Beyond the Spectrum Education Center is a more intensive program with sensory-based interventions for children who need extra help with managing their ADHD behavior. Each of these program sections uses computer-based curriculum and behavioral therapeutic approaches to managing behavior throughout the child's day.
