Technology: A device both parents and educators should appreciate

The old excuse, "I forgot my homework" or the common tale told by school children, "the dog ate it," may soon be of no use to young learners.

A New York education technology start-up company will release the first-of-its-kind touchscreen tablet designed to “replace the contents of a student's backpack,” according to the Mar. 6, USA Today.

The Android powered device comes “pre-loaded with virtually everything a student will encounter during the school day, including all the textbooks, lessons, tests and e-books she might be assigned,” according to the report.

Amplify Education Inc., the creator of the mobile computing device, will offer the devices with Wi-Fi and 4G capabilities; both models will require, not unlike most cellular phones, a two year service contract.

The most saleable points of the new learning technology are:

  • Teachers have the ability to both monitor and control what students do with the device.
  • Teachers can conduct lessons with an entire class or small group and can instantly see what websites or lesson areas students are visiting.
  • A teacher dashboard allows them to take instant polls, ask kids to "raise their hands" virtually.

And a feature that every teacher can appreciate,

  • If things get out of hand, redirect the entire class with an "Eyes on Teacher" button that instantly pushes the message out to every screen.

The new “education tablet,” which initially will only be available to schools, makes its debut today, Mar. 6,at the South x Southwest Education conference in Austin.
