The Focus on the Family ad featuring Tim Tebow is set to run tomorrow during the Super Bowl. Has there ever been so much hype over thirty seconds of time? Amazingly, it has caused more pregame water-cooler talk than all of the other Super Bowl ads combined. In fact, no one is talking about the Anheuser-Busch, Go-Daddy, or Denny’s ads that will be running. No outrage over Doritos, E*Trade, or Volkswagen.
Why the big fuss over a boy and his mom sharing their personal story? It appears to this examiner that anytime an athlete gets into the headlines (Michael Vick, Brett Favre, Tiger Woods), the public wants to know everything - every angle, every secret, every detail. And because we crave information, we cause reporters to dig deep and uncover personal details. So, why then should a voluntary thirty-second true story about the events surrounding the birth of the famed Florida Gator quarterback, cause so much ire before it even airs?
It is obvious where Tebow stands on the issues of life and family, and with a little insight into his personal story, it will be equally obvious on why. On Super Bowl Sunday, we all will get a thirty second peak into that personal story.
