Was Tebow forced on owner of the New York Jets, Woody Johnson? That's the claim allegedly being made by Johnson himself. The Jets owner reportedly told general manager candidate Ted Sundquist that Tim Tebow was forced on him, according to a Jan. 21, 2013 report by ESPN. Sundquist didn't get the GM position, but he did get a juicy story to tell.
The New York Jets ultimately chose Seahawks executive John Idzik as their new general manager, leaving Sundquist free from any loyalty to the Jets and free to talk about the topics discussed during his interview with Johnson and team president Neil Glat. Apparently one such topic was how Tebow was forced on owner Woody Johnson despite public perception that Johnson had actually orchestrated Tebow's move to the Jets.
According to the New York Daily News, another candidate for the Jets GM position said the topic of Tebow being forced on the owner of the team was not a topic of discussion during his interview. That candidate was not identified.
The implication seems to be that former GM Mike Tannenbaum was responsible for bringing Tebow on board. Tannenbaum declined to comment when contacted by New York Daily News, and Johnson has not spoken publicly about Sundquist's claim.
