There's no doubting that Shigesato Itoi's Mother series, known as Earthbound in America, has an incredibly dedicated fanbase. These fans have taken it upon themselves to translate the Japan-exclusive Mother 3, and have made Earthbound one of the most successful titles on the Wii U eShop. This is why it should come as no surprise that a group of hardcore fans have decided to continue this beloved franchise. The team responsible for Mother 4 released the game's first teaser trailer earlier today.
Mother 4 follows Travis, a young boy who is comfortable with living in his older brother's shadow. He'll team up with Meryl, who is able to see the future, the shady but dependable Leo, and the charmingly popular Floyd. Not much is known about these characters, but their artwork is very reminiscent of the original series. Staples such as “PSI” attacks also make a return.
It should be noted that, while this game may look professional, it is in no way affiliated with Nintendo or those responsible for the original series. As for a release window, the developing team plans to launch the final product during winter of next year. The game will be available as a downloadable title for PC, Mac and Linux. Not only will the game be available for free, but the creators are refusing to accept any sort of payment for their hard work. Make sure to check out this unofficial fan-project's website for more information. There's also a new teaser trailer and a collection of screenshots to see as well.
