Teaneck defeats Northern Highlands

Teaneck defeated Northern Highlands, 56-54, in high school girls' basketball.

Northern Highlands applied a full court zone press that earned them a few steals around the half-court line. Within the first four minutes of the game they led 8-2. Teaneck called time out and returned with more confidence. With 1:46 remaining in the firs quarter, they trailed, 12-7.

The end of first quarter score was 17-11.

Northern Highlands returned with their press in the second quarter and fell into a zone defense once Teaneck was able to cross the half-court. With 3:33 left in the half Northern Highlands had the lead, 28-18. The score was 32-20 with a few seconds to go in the first half when Teaneck broke to the basket and scored. The half-time score was 32-22.

Teaneck returned in the second half fired up. They broke through the Northern Highlands defense to score. When Northern Highlands packed in their zone, Teaneck hit an outside shot. At the end of the third quarter the score was tied, 43-43.

Northern Highlands has much speed and height. With 5:49 remaining they earned the lead back, 46-43.

Northern Highlands and Teaneck battled back and forth until it came down to a tie game, 54-54, in the final minutes of the game.

With less than 16 seconds on the clock, Teaneck set up a sideline inbounds play. They were able to get the ball to the open foul line. The shot went up, but Northern Highlands hustled to tip it. Kayla Gibbs secured the rebound and despite being trapped by three players, she faked inside and then did a drop step and scored, 2 seconds before the buzzer went off. Northern Highlands inbounded it quickly and threw a long shot from the far corner, but it was no good.
