The Sporting News reported today that teammate and projected first-round draft pick Tyler Eifert answered questions regarding Manti Te'o on Friday. The talented tight end who trained together with Te'o in preparation for the NFL Scouting Combine spoke up about the hoax that continues to be a hot topic.
Eifert acknowledged he didn't hear about the hoax surrounding Te'o's internet girlfriend until it became national news and he considers Te'o a very good friend who just "got stuck in a bad situation".
As NFL teams continue to scout and question about his teammate's mental state, Eifert said that Te'o is good and seems focused as he prepares to meet with teams throughout the weekend including a scheduled meeting with the media on Saturday.
"He's doing great. I think he's handled the whole situation really well, considering the circumstances and how big it brew up to be."
Eifert went on to compliment Te'o as a "smart guy" who "didn't do anything wrong" and also a player and person not obsessing over his draft stock status which may drop considerably after the bizarre story was exposed.
Earlier this week, Te'o told USA Today that he was putting all distractions behind him and just focusing on what's ahead of him.
"I have to just go out there and perform and all that other stuff is behind me. What I did on the field is what I did on the field. I don't think what I did with this whole situation; I don't understand how it takes away from what I did on the field."
As he prepares for the draft and enters the next level of his career, it is good for Te'o to know he has a friend and fellow player in Eifert on his side.
