At the half-way mark of the XVI Pan America Games Team USA leads all countries in the medal count.
The 600+ contingent, competing in three dozen sports, has won 143 medals: 54 gold, 49 silver, and 40 bronze. Canada (63 overall) and Brazil (59) round out the top three among 42 nations.
Several American athletes, many of whom are London Olympics hopefuls, are multi-medalists.
Leading the way is backstroker Elizabeth Pelton who has medaled in five swimming events: two individual and three relay. Amanda Kendall (swimming), Erika Erndl (swimming) Julie Zetlin (rhythmic gymnastics), and Regina Jacques (water skiing) have each landed on the podium four times.
In team events, U.S. has won medals in 6 sports: Archery (gold, silver), Equestrian (2 golds), Softball (gold), Cycling Track (silver, bronze), Table Tennis (bronze), and Volleyball (bronze).
The swimming squad finished with 44 medals, outracing the nearest the Brazilians who nabbed 24 podiums. Other top American units include Shooting whose team seized 18 medals, and Rowing which nabbed eight medals.
This quadrennial competition, a great warm-up to the London Games, runs through October 30.
