On March 14th, the seventh day of competition at the 2014 Sochi Winter Paralympic Games, Team USA picked up eight medals in Alpine Skiing (which includes the new Paralympic sport of Para Snowboard). Team USA won their first gold of the games with a sweep of the men's Para Snowboard podium. Team USA currently sits with a total of 16 Paralympic medals (one gold, seven silver, and eight bronze). While this puts them in 3rd place for the actual number of medals won, it puts them 9th overall in the ranked medal standings.
Alpine Skiing Update:
Both Para Snowboard Cross and the Super Combined Run 2 (Super-G) took place today. This was the debut of snowboarding in the Paralympics with just one event (Para Snowboarding Cross – Standing), and Team USA won four medals, including a sweep of the men’s podium and Team USA’s first gold of the games. The Super Combined Run 2 (Super-G) was rescheduled from March 11th, and Run 1 (Slalom) plus Run 2 together resulted in Team USA winning four medals.
Women’s Para Snowboard Cross – Standing: Amy Purdy won the bronze medal. Christina Albert placed 4th, Heidi Jo Duce finished 5th. Nicole Roundy finished 8th. Megan Harmon finished 10th.
Men’s Para Snowboard Cross – Standing: Team USA swept the podium with Evan Strong winning gold, Michael Shea winning silver, and Keith Gabel winning bronze. Tyler Burdick placed 8th. Daniel Monzo placed 18th.
Women’s Super Combined – Visually Impaired: Danelle Umstead won bronze.
Women’s Super Combined – Standing: Stephanie Jallen won bronze. Allison Jones placed 4th.
Women’s Super Combined – Sitting: Laurie Stephens was scheduled to compete but did not start.
Men’s Super Combined – Visually Impaired: Mark Bathum won silver.
Men’s Super Combined – Standing: James Stanton placed 13th.
Men’s Super Combined – Sitting: Heath Calhoun won silver.

Men’s 15km – Sitting: Andrew Soule placed 4th. Daniel Cnossen placed 10th. Sean Halsted placed 11th. Jeremy Wagner placed 18th. Aaron Pike placed 19th. Travis Dodson placed 21st.
Women’s 12.5km – Standing: No competitors from Team USA.
Men’s 15km – Standing: Omar Bermejo placed 17th.
Women’s 12.5km – Visually Impaired: No competitors from Team USA.
Men’s 15km – Visually Impaired: Kevin Burton finished 12th.

Ice Sledge Hockey Update:
There was no Ice Sledge Hockey competition for Team USA today. Coming off yesterday’s exciting victory over Canada in the Play-offs Semifinals, Team USA faces Russia on March 15th in the Gold Medal Game. Team USA lost to Russia in Preliminary Round – Group B, so they will be looking for victory both in the re-match and to defend their title as gold medalists at the 2010 Paralympic Games.
