Team spotlight: Wichita East

Spotlight on Wichita East Blue Aces

Coach: Jim Griffis

Assistant Coaches: Dylan Gruntzel, David Lang

2008 record: 11-5-2; placed 2nd in the North Cup

Coach Griffis has coached soccer for six years, the last two with the Blue Aces. He had the blessing of growing up playing soccer in Brazil and Venezuela . He would like to see the U.S. grow to similar levels of passion for the game of soccer.

The Blue Aces lost five seniors from last year's team. But the team returns eight starters and has added some key players. Spencer Crouch (sweeper), Matt Mally (defender), and Gary Rodriguez (goalkeeper) will serve as team captains because of their emergent leadership and their positions on the field. Each starter will play a key role in the team’s success. Oliver Bradwell adds to the team’s speed and striking ability. Joseph Yun is a returning striker who is excellent at taking defenders one-on-one.

Wichita East boys soccer should once again contend for the city league title.  They hope to improve on last season’s record of 11-5-2 and set up postseason play. Wichita East lost a tough match to Emporia in their opener of the Titan Classic tournament.  Next up, the next round in the Titan Classic.
