With October and Breast Cancer Awareness month just around the corner, corporations and individuals alike will be doing their part to support various breast cancer-related initiatives. But promoting pink-colored products or putting on a 10K doesn't hold a candle to the novel way that the Team Demolition Association (TDA) is raising funds for breast cancer research and awareness.
On Saturday September 28, the TDA will be pulling out all stops for its “Racin’ for Boobs,” event, which includes pink balloons for fans in the grandstand and smashing an old car with a sledgehammer to raise monies for research. And of course, there is the third running of the ladies team demo event, which will see High Risk square up against the Double D Destroyers at Route 66 in Joliet.
Although they’ll be piloting cars in various shades of pink, the lady drivers are definitely no shrinking violets. Christy Millette, a two-time winner with High Risk will be gunning for her third straight trophy in a behemoth named “Bitch Bangg.”
Megan Decker, formerly of High Risk and now a Double D Destroyer, returns to ladies demo action fresh off of a second place spectator finish at Sycamore Speedway, where she became the first female to place in points and tied her brother, Ryan, who races for Team Reckoning on Saturday nights at Route 66.
All eight teams have a female driver representing them in the race, which can lead to some heated competition for a shot on the track. In 2012, LeAnn Foreman successfully bid $276 for a chance to drive for the Noble Brothers’ Strangehold at the team’s fundraiser. Early this year, Foreman struck a deal to drive for Seek N Destroy’s Greg Mesich, which saw Mesich getting a much-needed cash infusion and Foreman earning another shot at the trophy that eluded her as a Double D Destroyer.
Foreman will be joining Millette, cousin Lorna Millette and another two-time winner Rebecca Ketelaar on the High Risk squad. Although hell-bent on getting a trophy, Foreman said that she also wanted to participate in the race due to the fact that many family members have had breast cancer and her aunt Donna is a survivor.
Foreman will be taking on all comers in a massive 79 Cadillac. She said that the Caddy has no rust, plush velvet seats, and most importantly, new tires as bad wheels proved to be her undoing in last year’s race.
This season’s newcomer is Amber Domrose who will be joining Decker, Amanda Clemmons and Jeanette McGuire on the Double D Destroyers team. Her sturdy 1978 Oldsmobile Holiday 88 was built by a consortium that included her brothers and boyfriend, Nick Hartung of Real Steel. Noting that her brothers participate in the spectator truck races, Domrose said she “thought she should give it a shot."
It could be a very exciting night for Domrose as Hartung’s Real Steel has a shot of taking home the championship at the 2013 finale. This first-year team finds itself in the driver’s seat as they are tied for points with perennial powerhouse Orange Crush but hold the edge in the tiebreaker. Domrose notes that at the onset of the season “we didn’t know how far we would go” but is very pleased and proud at the outcome.
All in all, it will be an extremely exciting evening as evidenced by the fact that tickets have been sold out since Thursday. But parking is free, the weather promises to be lovely and the pit party will be in full swing from 4 until 6 with plenty of unique "Racin' for Boobs" merchandise. All proceeds from the sale of these products will be donated to breast cancer research so feel free to head out and paint the town pink by participating in the pre-race festivities.
