Wicomico County Sheriff officials confirm that a Wicomico public school teacher has been charged with multiple counts following accusations that he sexually abused a student.
Steven Mark Kiggins, 43, was a teacher and girls' volleyball coach at Wicomico High School in Salisbury. He is currently on leave from both positions following his arrest.
On Thursday, January 19, 2012, Mr. Kiggins was arrested following accusations that he had sexual contact with a female student. Charging documents indicate that the alleged sexual misconduct took place on and off of the school campus.
Kiggins is charged with sex abuse of a minor, three counts of second-degree assault and three counts of fourth-degree sex offense. He was released in lieu of $50,000 bond. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for February 16, 2012.
Kiggins was a teacher and head volleyball coach at Wicomico High School, until these recent developments when Wicomico County School officials placed him on leave. It has also been reported by numerous media outlets that Kiggins also coached girls' tennis and indoor track.
Wicomico County School officials confirm that Kiggins he has been removed from the classroom, but they called it a personnel matter and wouldn't give further details.
Charging documents indicate that the victim alleged she was between 16 and 17 when she and the coach had sex in a classroom about once a week. The latest accusation of sexual misconduct comes after a previous volleyball coach at the same school pleaded guilty in 2007 to having sex with a 16-year-old player.
