When a Teacher of the Year gets 38 years behind bars, one knows it was for a serious crime, and that’s unfortunately the case this week. This former “Teacher of the Year,” Ethel Anderson, will be facing 38 years in jail for having sex with a 12-year-old student. A court case has found Ms. Anderson guilty of engaging in oral sex with the male minor, as well as exchanging in appropriate text messages with him, The Ledger News confirms this Wednesday, Dec. 11, 2013.
School officials and the public at large were shocked to hear that a former “Teacher of the Year,” Ms. Ethel Anderson, of Tampa, Florida, had sex with her 12-year-old student. As a woman many looked to as a major role model, such a sex crime with a minor has not only tarnished her own record, offers the report, but brought shame to the local school system itself. Jail time is being seen as a fitting punishment for the former middle school teacher, having taken advantage of her authority role to sexually abuse a minor.
The 31-year-old teacher of the year is not a bachelorette, either. She is married and a mother as well, and was called in court this Monday “a parents’ worst nightmare” for engaging in repeated sexual activity with the 12-year-old male student from one of her classes. The inappropriate contact was said to have taken place with the young boy during private tutoring sessions that Anderson was having after school with the unidentified student.
After the victim testified to the court that Ms. Anderson had sexually approached him during one of their tutoring sessions, kissed him during more than one meeting, and eventually performed oral sex on the 12-year-old, the past Teacher of the Year was given 38 years in a state prison as punishment for her actions. According to the report, numerous sexual messages were also exchanged between the teacher and the student, amounting to almost 250 pages of explicit text messages.
In pleading not guilty and being convicted, it was also revealed that Anderson had previously turned down an initial plea deal that would lead to a lesser 15 years in prison. Having left her fate in the courts and found guilty, she now faces over double that jail time. Since the incident, the boy has since transferred schools. Ethel Anderson is expected to begin her long sentence behind bars for the heinous act within the next two months.
