Teacher Leah Gayle Shipman marries minor she had sex with, escapes jail sentence

Leah Gayle Shipman, 42, had sex with her 15-year-old student at Wilmington High School in North Carolina and was facing 15 years in prison for statutory rape. So in order to escape that potential prison sentence, Shipman married the victim, Johnnie Ray Ison, two years after she was arrested.

This means authorities no longer have a strong case against her since they cannot force Ison, now 19, to testify against his wife, according to The Wilmington Star-News. “This is because under North Carolina law a defendant's spouse cannot be made to testify in criminal cases.”

This teacher divorced her husband of 19 years. Six days after that divorce, Shipman married the teenager. Ison’s mother actually gave permission for her son to marry Shipman because the boy was still a minor.

“The wedding only became public knowledge after Shipman pleaded guilty last month to resisting an officer investigating alleged abuse. She was given a 30-day suspended jail sentence. She was fired by the school.’

Readers, how do you feel about this story? Don’t you think it is shocking to see that some teachers would actually sleep with their vulnerable, immature students? Dedicated teachers care about their students. However, when the school bell rings, these teachers cannot wait to rush home to spent time with their family or adult friends.
