Teach your dog to be a good citizen

The American Kennel Club offers a Canine Good Citizen (CGC) certification that you and your dog can work on together. The certification is considered to be intermediate in obedience. Working on passing the test is a fun way for you and dog to communicate and should be done with the spirit of joy, not dictatorship.

A test is given which includes 10 items your dog must pass. These include:

  • Accepting a friendly stranger
  • Sitting politely for petting
  • Appearance and grooming
  • Out for a walk (walking on a loose lead)
  • Walking through a crowd
  • Sit and down on command and staying in place
  • Coming when called
  • Reaction to another dog
  • Reaction to distraction
  • Supervised separation

If you are interested in working towards the CGC you can take classes with various trainers or through the Great Salt Lake Dog Training Club. Their next sign up is Feb. 6th, 2013 at 7pm at the West Jordan Armory, located at 7602 Airport Road, West Jordan, UT.
