Teach Your Child to Think of Others!

It’s important to teach your child that any act of kindness should be recognized! When children are little, they just “expect” people to read those books and to play with them. They’re not even aware that it’s something “extra”. They may love it and enjoy the play and the book reading, but they still don’t have the awareness that it’s just not an everyday thing.
What you need to do is point those things out to them. “Wasn’t it so nice of Grandma to come and read that book to you? What do you think that we could do to say thank you?” OR “It was really so kind of our neighbor to give you some of the cookies that she just made. What could we do to show her how much you appreciated that?”
Situations like this give you an opportunity to point out kind things that people do. It also gives you the opportunity to teach your child to recognize the kindness of others. Asking your child what he thinks you both could do to say thank you is important because it not only teaches, but helps him be an active part of the process. Kids love when you ask for their ideas! Initially just learning to say “Thank you for making the cookies and sharing with me” is a lot. But the more your child experiences things like this the more he will begin to think of others and doing something for them too.
