A couple of Sundays ago the first Tea Social to raise awareness and funding for the New Orleans String Project was held at the Healing Center on St. Claude Avenue. Inside The Healing Center Café Istanbul offered a great venue to hear young children of New Orleans share their string instrument talents while exposing the community to what the New Orleans String Project (NOSP) is about. The goal of the NOSP is to cultivate young inner city musicians through traditional old world instruments and classical music. Introducing children to music and instruments by putting string instrument in the hands of children whom would normally not get to play such instruments is how Musical Director and Instructor Patricia Weber summed it up.
The Tea Social was a success and set precedence for what is to become an annual event. As a fund raising social it was truly not your everyday average event. The tasty treats were plentiful and the setting was gracefully tasteful. There were fancy hats worn and dresses for the ladies which made the event especially elegant. Look for the next NOSP fund raising event next Fall or contact them to find out how you can help or get your children involved. Playing a string instrument is very beneficial in many ways for children, in that it stimulates a higher sense of self awareness as well as the mental senses, it instills discipline, and improves physical dexterity. The cultural significance itself is immeasurable while it eludes children into a world apart of their own familiar environment to give them a wider vantage point of the world. Healthy, wealthy, and wise with culture and fulfillment is exactly what the doctor ordered for these String Kids, and one can sense that they know they are a part of something special.
