Gayle's Chocolates, in downtown Royal Oak, sells delicious confections as well as tea, but occasionally the retailer combines the two to create tea-infused chocolates. One of their selections is a chai tea truffle which is a mixture of milk chocolate, butter, tea, ginger and "special spices" of cinnamon, cardamon, white pepper and cloves.
Ami Woods, marketing representative for Gayle's Chocolates, says owner Gayle Harte's inspiration for the store came from her love of chocolate. In 1979 Harte was a divorced mother of two, living in Huntington Woods and she was looking for a way to support her family. She knew that friends and family loved her truffles, so she took a gamble that other people would as well. She opened a certified commercial kitchen in her home and began her business there.
The chocolates were so popular it lead to Harte opening a retail store in its current location on Washington Avenue in Royal Oak. The business continues to grow with Gayle's Chocolates now available at Metro Airport and it ships to 48 states on a regular basis.
Per Woods, "Gayle's Chocolates are all made upstairs from the flagship retail store, by hand, with love, using only the finest natural ingredients. Gayle is truly Detroit's original mistress of chocolate."
Asked if there are more tea truffles in the offering, chocolatier Harte says, "we have made green tea truffles made with matcha, jasmine truffles and Earl Grey truffles. We will make them again closer to the winter holidays."
Gayle's Chocolates sells Harney Teas along with a number of tea accessories. The store also carries a wide variety of chocolate confections, including assorted novelty treats in fun shapes.
In addition, Gayle's offers a full specialty coffee and tea bar, open daily.
