The TCNJ women’s basketball team are back on the winning side of things.
The Lions came into their game with the Rutgers-Newark on a two game losing streak. That streak was snapped, as the Lions were able to pick up another conference win by defeating the Scarlet Raiders.
The Lions won 73-69 on Saturday night in Newark, New Jersey. The win moved the Lions into sole possession of second place in the New Jersey Athletic Conference.
They are 5-1 within the NJAC, and they only trail Montclair State, who is a perfect 7-0 on the young season. The two teams face each other on Wednesday night in Packer Hall on the Ewing campus.
The win improved the Lions to 9-4 overall and 4-3 on the road this season. The Scarlet Raiders dropped to 8-5 overall and 4-3 within the NJAC and their three-game win streak was snapped in the loss.
The Lions were up much throughout the second half. In fact, the Scarlet Raiders did not have a single lead in the second half. The Lions biggest lead was by 15 points at 42-27.
Late in the game, the Scarlet Raiders would get within 2 points with 6 seconds left. The score was 71-69 at that point after a Jasmine Daniels layup.
The Lions went into the break with a 38-27 lead.
The Lions would have their largest lead at 11 points in the first half at 36-25. This came at 2:23 left when Tiffany DeTulio made a jumper.
A minute later, they would have another 11 point lead at 38-27 at 1:11. This 11 point lead came after a Colleen Duffy jumper.
The game was tied at 12-12 less than 4 minutes into the game. Laura Shakiri made a three-pointer to tie up the game.
The game was also tied at 6-6 after another three-pointer by Shakiri.
Rutgers-Newark had three leads in the entire game, and they came early in the first half. The Scarlet Raiders led 9-8 just three minutes in after a three-pointer by Maria Simmons.
They also had a three-point lead to start the game after three-pointer by Shakiri. They had a 1-point lead thirty seconds in after Lions’ Kylie O’Donnell made a layup.
O’Donnell lead the Lions with 19 points. She was followed by Jessica Goldbach, who scored a career-high 15 points. Kelly Roddy was the other Lions player with double-figures at 12 points.
The Scarlet Raiders were led by Simmons, who had 16 points. ShaQuanna Marshall came off the bench to also chip in another 16 points. Jade Howard was the other Scarlet Raiders to score double-figures at 15 points.
