For the third time this season, The College of New Jersey women's basketball team has defeated Richard Stockton College.
The first two games were so close that the Lions won by a combined 4 points. Yet, in the third meeting, the game turned out to be a double-digit win for TCNJ.
The Lions (18-8) defeated the Ospreys (12-13), 69-57, last night at Packer Hall. The game came in the first round of the New Jersey Athletic Conference Championship tournament, which an NCAA bid at stake.
The third-seeded Lions will now face second-seed William Paterson on Wednesday night. The semi-final tip-off will take place at 7 pm, and the the Pioneers have defeated the Lions both games this season.
This was their first win in the NJAC playoffs win since the 2008-09 season. That year, the Lions finished third place by winning the National Consolation Game over Amherst College to come in third place in the entire country.
In order to advance and return to their past glory, they would have to defeat William Paterson. Then defeat the Rutgers-Newark-Montclair State winner on February 23rd.
The Lions led throughout the second half. Yet, Richard Stockton College would only get within 7 points in the half.
There were only four times during the half that the Lions did not have a double-digit lead.
Che'Na Thompson got the Ospreys within 9 points at when she scored two of her 18 points on back-to-back free throws to make the score 66-57.
The Lions largest lead came when Candace Vigo scored a layup for two of her 13 points to make it 55-37. The 18-point lead came with 10:34 left in the game.
The first minute of the second half, the Lions were already up 10 points. Vigo scored a layup to put the Lions up 36-26.
Sara Farrell scored one of her 12 points when she made a free throw to make it 34-26.
Farrell's free throw with 30 seconds into the half was their last basket, before going on a streak where the Ospreys did not score for nearly 4 minutes.
The Lions led 34-25 at the half.
Tiffany DeTulio scored two of her 10 points when she made back-to-back free throws to make the score 34-25 to end the first half.
Prior to DeTulio's baskets from the free throw line, her basket snapped a 5-minute run where the Ospreys held the Lions scoreless.
Kelsey Brown scored two of her four points when she made a layup to cut the score to 32-25.
Kelly Roddy scored three of her 9 points when she stole the ball then followed with a three-point basket. Her three-pointer would put the Lions up 9 points at 32-23.
The Lions had a 3 and 6 point lead before Roddy's basket. This all came after the game was tied at 20-20.
Farrell made a free throw at 8:30 left to make the game tied at 20-20.
The game was also tied at 15-15 when Jessica Goldbach scored three of her 8 points. Ta'Yon Morgan-Jones scored her only points when she scored a two-point basket to make it 17-15.
The Lions then had the lead until the game was tied at 20-20. Richard Stockton also scored a two point basket on a fastbreak layup to make it 15-13.
The game was also tied at 13-13 and at 11-11. Thompson gave the Ospreys an 11-10 lead when she made a three-point basket.
The Lions had an 10-8 lead when after Angelica Esposito when she scored three of her 10 points. Thompson gave the Ospreys an 8-7 lead when she made a layup.
Then, the Lions went on a 5-2 run to make it 7-6. The Ospreys had a 4-2 lead before the Lions went on this run.
Thompson's jumper gave the Ospreys a 4-2 lead after the game was tied at 2-2. The Lions got an early 2-0 lead to start the game.
