TCNJ men's basketball falls to Jersey City

The TCNJ men's basketball team continues to struggle against Jersey City.

The Lions haven't defeated the Gothic Knights in three years. And that includes last night's loss, as the Lions lost 66-62 against the Knights.

The Lions haven't beat Jersey City since January 2010. In the January 9, 2010 game, the Lions won 66-60 in overtime on the Ewing campus.

In addition, the Gothic Knights improved to 5-5 on their "Green and Gold" Day. They have won four straight game on this day.

And it is the second straight year the Knights have defeated the Lions in North Jersey on their "Green and Gold" Day.

It is also their second home win this season. They are 2-4 at home, with a win against Susquehanna University on December 15, 2012, before last night's game.

The Gothic Knights improved to 6-9 overall, and 2-7 in the NJAC conference. The Lions dropped to 4-11 overall, and 2-7 within the conference, as well.

Jersey City outscored the Lions in each half. In the second half, the Gothic Knights outscored the Lions by 1 point at 36-35.

Drew Marley made a free throw with two seconds left to give the Gothic Knights a 66-62 lead. Marley had 16 points in the game.

His teammate, Dakwan Simmons, made back-to-back free throws with 14 seconds left. Simmons, who contributed 13 points, made the score 65-62 with those free throws.

The Lions cut the Gothic Knights lead to one point with 19 seconds left. Emmanuel Matlock, who had 8 points, made a layup to make it 63-62.

William Lester made back-to-back free throws for the Lions with 28 seconds left. Lester, who had 12 points, made the score 63-60 with his free throws.

The Gothic Knights were up 5 points with 42 seconds left. Marley made a layup to make it 63-58.

The Knights had the lead throughout the half, as the Lions attempted to come back. Four minutes in, Jersey City had a double-digit lead, which lasted for nearly seven minutes.

The Lions got the score under 10 points at 48-39 with a free throw by Matlock with 9:51. But the Gothic Knights would have the lead above 10 two other times in the half.

The Gothic Knights were up 30-27 at the half. Khalif Muhammad, who had 13 points, made a free throw with 38 seconds to make it 30-27.

The game was tied at 27 points with 1:09 left after Lester made a three-pointer. The game was also tied at 10 points with 11:36, before the Gothic Knights took the lead.

Jayson Johnson, who had 10 points, made back-to-back free throws to tie the game at 10. Before the 10-10 tie, the Gothic Knights lead for the first several minutes.

In the first several minutes, the Gothic Knights had a 6 point lead at 6-0, The Lions would cut the lead at half when Matthew Rista, who had 10 points, cut the score to 6-3 with a three-pointer.
