TCMs Life in the Depression series continues Thursday night
Only four movies airing under the Life in the Depression banner on Turner Classic Movies tonight, and of those two are actually from the 1980's, which is a little too recent for us to discuss in this space. The other two are winners though, both 1933 releases.
In the late night feature, "Gabriel Over the White House," Walter Huston stars as an initially cavalier President of the United States, who after being involved in a life threatening car crash wakes up from a coma to return to office a changed man who digs into all of the issues of the day with an iron fist but as defender of the people. Also starring Karen Morley and Franchot Tone, directed by Gregory La Cava.
The main attraction at 8 pm is the classic musical "Gold Diggers of 1933," which besides featuring Busby Berkeley's daring choreography to classics such as "We're in the Money," "Pettin' in the Park," and "Remember My Forgotten Man," includes a separate story wherein well-to-do J. Lawrence Bradford (Warren William) gets involved in a case of mistaken identity when trying to quelch his brother's (Dick Powell) romance with a lowly showgirl (Ruby Keeler). Tucked in between the musical numbers is this screwball romance also involving Joan Blondell, Aline MacMahon, and Guy Kibbee. Directed by Mervyn LeRoy.
