Turner Classic Movies continues its 2012 Summer Under the Stars programming with a full day of movies starring Eva Marie Saint on Sunday, August 19. The stage and television actress earned an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for her first film role in “On the Waterfront” (1954) and went on to appear in a number of memorable pictures that will air during the day.
The morning begins at 6 a.m. Eastern with “All Fall Down” (1962), which also stars Warren Beatty, Karl Malden, and Angela Lansbury. In “The Sandpiper” (1965) at 8 a.m., Saint appears with Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton. James Garner and Rod Taylor join Saint for the war thriller, “36 Hours” (1965), at 10 a.m.
The afternoon features the Oscar-winning Elia Kazan drama, “On the Waterfront” (1954), at 12 p.m. Saint plays the love interest of conflicted dock worker Marlon Brando; the movie won eight Oscars, including Best Picture, with 12 total nominations. At 2 p.m. James Garner returns to costar with Saint and a high-profile cast in “Grand Prix” (1966). The Civil War drama, “Raintree County” (1957), airs at 5 p.m. and also stars Elizabeth Taylor and Montgomery Clift.
At 8 p.m., TCM airs the Hitchcock classic, “North by Northwest” (1959), as its prime time feature. Saint stars with Cary Grant and James Mason in the thrilling story of espionage, murder, and mistaken identity. Immediately following the film is “Destination Hitchcock: The Making of North by Northwest” (2000) at 10:30 p.m. “A Hatful of Rain” begins at 11:15 p.m., followed by the Paul Newman drama, “Exodus” (1960), at 1 a.m. The final film of the schedule is “Loving” (1970) at 4:30 a.m.
Eva Marie Saint, who is still alive and well in 2012, can currently be heard as the voice of Katara on the Nickelodeon cartoon, “The Legend of Korra.” You’ll also find her in “Because of Winn-Dixie” (2005) and “Superman Returns” (2006).
Summer Under the Stars continues all month, with each day showcasing a different classic movie actor or actress. Other upcoming stars of the day include Anthony Quinn on August 20, Kay Francis on August 21, and Jack Lemmon on August 22.
