Multi-platinum recording artist and acclaimed songwriter Taylor Swift originally wanted a different career path than the one fate dished out to her. Known for her heartfelt stories and nearly-make-believe characters, Swift has carved out an impressive list of chart-topping songs, including her most recent country single "Red," the title track off her record-selling album. After her move to Nashville in 2003, she reveals in a recent interview that writing has always been who she is (and a great way to pass the summer months).
"All my friends were back in Pennsylvania and so I had nothing to do," she says. "I had this epiphany; I’m going to be a novelist and I’m gonna write novels and that’s gonna be my career path. I would write different chapters of this book and send them back to my friends and I’d write them into the book under different names but totally describe their personalities. It was a really fun way to spend the summer.”
While things didn't quite turn out the way she initially planned, all her hard work and passion paid off. Now, she can channel her need to create into her music. She continues, "You can convey a thought or a story or completely describe a character or a situation through words and the whole process of editing and re-editing and rethinking and imagining."
She adds, "I think that that’s what I loved about writing the novel and that’s what I love about poetry and songwriting.”
