Taylor Swift Grammy performance defended by record label

Taylor Swift drew headlines around the country for her duet with Stevie Nicks during Sunday night's Grammy broadcast, but not all of the comments were positive to say the least. Entertainment Weekly questioned her pitch, and the New York Times went as far as to call her "pitch-challenged."

However, Swift's record label (Big Machine Records) is coming to her defense. CEO Scott Borchetta had this to say to the Associated Press:

"This is not 'American Idol.' This is not a competition of getting up and seeing who can sing the highest note...This is about a true artist and writer and communicator. It's not about that technically perfect performance."

Taylor's Swift's popularity is generated largely from the message of her music -- she has been criticized for live performances in the past (including a number on "Dancing With the Stars"), but she continues to win many people over (including the Grammys, who awarded her Album of the Year) for her ability to communicate with viewers using simple language and down-to-earth lyrics.

Taylor is a true artist and communicator. If anyone wants to fight that, come ask me. I can tell you first hand just how much of a true, talented, blessed artist she is.

Besides, anyone who picks on a woman from behind a magazine headline or computer is a coward, anyways.

"she wears short skirts, I wear t-shirts" is not great songwriting. She definitely needs singing lessons.

When it comes down to It, Taylor swift did have the best album in 2009, just look @ record sales, Now when it comes down to country female vocalist and winning against such talented people like Carrie underwood and Martina mcbride who put Taylor to shame on vocals, it's kind of sad. It's not cool that taylors label mentioned American idol. And I'm sorry in order to be a singer u have to know how to sing jmo And Taylor sorry you can't sing

Those critics are horrible. Normaly when you criticize someone you should tell them what they should do to improve not bring there confidence and self esteem down like that. Taylor is a very talented person her voice is one of a kind. Maybe she didnt do well in that performance but that happens! People who say she didnt deserve that award and she won it because of Kanye, are ridiculous because they clearly never bought her album and just listend to the hit songs on the radio and, She was selling millions with her album Fearless before the VMA's... Not to mention her first album who sold more than Fearless. One thing she doesnt deserve is all the hate she is getting right now. Taylor your a great person, ignore them haters.

Taylor Swift had the best album. She is a great performer... Ive seen her in concert with my daughter and i thought she was great. After her concert my daughter had the biggest smile on her face. People realy should stop hating on her over one show.

The performance was OK and mildly entertaining. They can't all be gems.

She is a great song writer & great role model for girls but she does not have the best vocals. She sounds great on a cd but not so live.

We who do not appreciate Taylor Swift are not saying she is entertaining. But the Grammy's is the highest standard in music. She has not had one off night. She has a problem performing in public. That is a threshold she should be able to surpass.

I much perfer kids be into Taylor Swift than the music of Nirvana, Stone Temple Pilots and Smashing Punkins. I just would not buy that crap.
