The senior running back is expected to be a leader on the new and Andrew Luck-less Stanford offense. Luck was the winner of last year’s Maxwell Award which is given to the top player in college football.
Since taking over for Toby Gerhart, Taylor has posted back to back one thousand yard seasons. And the Gerhart replacement was supposed to be running back by committee.
For his career Taylor has 2770 yards, a 5.3 yards per carry average and 27 touchdowns.
“In my opinion we have the best running back in the country,” Offensive coordinator Pep Hamilton said of his senior during spring practice. “We have to do a good job of giving him opportunities to feature his talents to move the chains for us.”
Quarterbacks have won the award the last nine years. Penn State running back Larry Johnson won it in 2002, the last non-quarterback to take home the trophy.
In all there are 14 players on the watch list from the Pac-12 lead by four from USC. Cal has two players on the list.
