Taylor Lautner to star opposite The Rock in 'David and Goliath'?

Over the years, there have been many, many rumors concerning what Taylor Lautner might get involved with next. The latest is, for now, just that. A so-called suggestion.

According to Twitch, there is current, on-going buzz concerning the possibility that Taylor Lautner might star opposite The Rock in a Hollywood rendition of the Biblical tale of David and Goliath.

If you're going to tell the story of the giant versus the shepherd boy you'd best find yourself an impressive giant and it would appear that Relativity have done just that with sources telling Twitch that they are now in talks with Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson to fill the role. As for the other side of the standoff things are not as advanced but word is that an offer has been made to Taylor Lautner to fill the part of David, which comes as no surprise given that Twilight producers Marty Bowen and Wyck Godfrey are also involved in this project.

Now, the association of Bowen and Godfrey with the film does add some merit to the possibility. Those two probably love Taylor Lautner and all-things-Twilight, so it wouldn't be surprising to hear they may want to bring him in to another of their films. On the other hand, it's far too early to tell whether this has become a sealed deal.

Still, the possibility that he could face-off with The Rock is probably a pretty exciting one for Taylor Lautner, who unquestionably wants to continue on in the action film scene.

Also, though Lautner is well-muscled and nothing close to small, in comparison to The Rock, he would look rather like a David.

Your thoughts on this potential development?

UPDATE: The Hollywood Reporter's Heat Vision Blog has addressed this issue with a lot more details confirming that, in fact, the rumor is true.

According to THR, both Lautner and The Rock (Dwayne Johnson) have been offered the roles of David and Goliath (respectively) in the film, called Goliath, and the storyline for the project is:

"The story is set in motion when the fierce warrior Goliath is sent to track down a foretold king of the Israelites. A young shepherd David is thrust into an epic chase and adventure fighting for his own life, the lives of his loved ones and eventually the lives of his people. The story climaxes in a battle of literal Biblical proportions between the young man and the giant sent to destroy him."

THR also explained the casting situation concerning the two, and why it is not a done deal just yet.

The early talks have not yet progressed into full-blown negotiations, as financial issues have gotten in the way. Both actors command upwards of $10 million in asking prices, depending on the project, so talks could end with a slingshot to the head before formal negotiations even begin.

Relativity is eyeing other casting options in case the scenario goes south.

So, with that in mind, do you hope Lautner accepts and stars opposite The Rock in this film?
