For Twilight's saga New Moon it was being considered not to recast Taylor Lautner due to his less than massive physic needed for his character in the sequel.
Instead of agreeing and walking away, Lautner changed his diet and went to the gym! As a result, he increased his muscle weight and put on 30 pounds, and was able to keep the role of Jacob.
Bryce Dallas Howard, however, will replace Rachelle Lefevre as the vampire Victoria in Eclipse, the third film in the Twilight franchise. Due to Lautner's hard work, he will not be replaced (in New Moon, nor in any other sequel, but let's not count our chickens).
The discipline required to maintain such a regime, that saved Lautner's role, is no stranger to him either. As Lautner has been an accomplished martial artist. He studied karate from the age of six to thirteen.
When Taylor was eleven, he was ranked number one in the world for NASKA's Black Belt Open Forms, Musical Weapons, Traditional Weapons and Traditional Forms and, at the age of twelve, he won the Junior World Championships. In an interview, fellow cast member Kristen Stewart talked about Lautner's transformation saying,
He's an entirely different person physically."
In addition to his physical stamina, his acting has required preparation as well. Since 2001 he began appearing in the made-for-television film Shadow Fury. He subsequently had roles on the series Summerland, The Bernie Mac Show, and My Wife and Kids. He has also had a recurring role on Danny Phantom as YoungBlood. In 2005 he had a starring role as Sharkboy, along with Cayden Boyd and Taylor Dooley in The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl in 3-D with Cayden Boyd and Taylor Dooley, a film that showcased his martial arts skills.
Lautner has also had small roles in a number of other television shows and movies, including The Nick & Jessica Variety Hour, America's Most Talented Kids. And he has worked in a variety of shows as a voiceover artist.
In October 2008, Lautner played Christian Slater's son in the television series My Own Worst Enemy, and then Jacob Black in Twilight, the movie adaptation of the novel by Stephenie Meyer.
In late March 2009, Summit Entertainment released a list of the actors who would be portraying the "wolf pack" alongside Lautner.
