According to a report from NBC-TV Chicago and the Better Government Association, Chicago taxpayers are paying approximately $1 million a year for government employees’ parking in Chicago Loop garages. The report also shows that some of these free-parking employees make over $100,000 annually.
This free parking is saving individual government employees thousands of dollars a year as the parking garage rates are astronomical.
The report reveals that literally hundreds of employees of the City of Chicago, Cook County, and the State of Illinois government are parking either for free or for a reduced rate. The concern is that their vehicle is still charged the full amount, but Chicagoans’ taxes are covering the hefty bills.
The information revealed by NBC and the BGA shows that employees such as Cheryl Hyman, the Chancellor of the City Colleges of Chicago who is paid $250,000 per year, parks free. The report estimates that that is a personal savings to the highly-paid city official of $2,600 a year. Hyman also has a personal driver and a city car which are also paid for by taxpayers.
Hyman, however, is just one of many with the perks. Seventy-five employees who make over $100,000 a year, in fact, park for free.
