With many Americans looking to rebound from a terrible year or a holiday season that left them stretched thin financially, tax season and getting a tax return is often dubbed a second Christmas for them. Most file electronically using an online tax preparation service and many found out their returns wouldn’t be accepted until January 30th due to new tax laws and many that were phasing out. The normal tax refund schedule no longer applied and many were wondering when their return would be processed.
The tax refund schedule is simply a table of when you should expect your return based on when your return was accepted by the IRS. Note that this is not the date when you filed but rather when the IRS accepted the return. Most of the time when you e-file, you can expect your refund within 3 weeks of the accepted date. If you paper file, the return date can be twice as long. If you have filed and are wondering when you can expect your refund check there are a few places you can check.
If you filed through TurboTax, you can download an app called “Mytaxrefund” which will tell you when the refund was accepted and when you can expect the refund to be deposited to your account. If you filed through any other preparer or method, you can go to irs.gov and click on the link titled “where’s my tax refund” to check the status of your refund.
You will need your SSN, the amount of money expected and the date you filed. The system will look up your filed refund and tell you the status. These are good tools to use this year since the normal tax refund schedule is slightly out of order due to the filing delays.
