A new proposal to tax citizens for mileage driven was submitted by the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) on March 24th as a means to fill the gap in the government deficit, and in current transportation programs.
In the report by the CBO, the primary focus is on finding new funds to pay for highway maintenance, but the details of the proposal extend much further than revenues to pay for a specific program. Besides external infrastructure to monitor, report, and tax drivers in motion across the country, ways are being looked at the have equipment installed in every vehicle and use GPS to also track where you go, and where you are at any given time.
Welcome to a nationwide Big Brother system.
The report was originally requested by Senate Budget Committee Chairman Kent Conrad, and in coordination with Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood, the proposal is part of a larger program that could cost $556 Billion dollars to the American taxpayer. The umbrella program proposed by the Obama administration was created to deal with federal transportation improvement projects.
What is not mentioned in the proposal is whether the mileage tax initiative would replace current gasoline taxes that make up nearly 15% of the price when you buy a gallon of gas. These taxes are what have been used for decades to pay for highway repairs, and transportation projects.
What also is of concern is the duplicity of the federal government, and their push for green energy. One of the major benefits of buying a hybrid or electric autombile is the gasoline and mileage savings one incurrs to compensate for the much higher costs of purchasing a green vehicle. Since the government is pushing for more of these cars and trucks to replace the current inventory of gasoline and diesel vehicles on the road, they are realizing the potential loss of tax revenues from gasoline should Americans move en masse to this form of transportation.
Americans are taxed in nearly every single thing they do, and yet the government in crisis seeks more from the taxpayer cash cow. The people spoke at the last election to cut spending and remove programs to balance the government budget, and with this new proposal by the CBO, Washington appears to have no intention of cutting anything, and in fact, looks to grow even bigger.
A tax on milieage proposed by the CBO to help pay for new programs, and suppliment the budget deficit should be a wake-up call to all Americans that our elected officials continue to see you more as a means of revenue, rather than citiizens of a nation.
