Tax filing help is free in San Antonio

Spring is in the air but so is the tax filing deadline. March brings us new blooms and warmer temperatures for San Antonio but it is also the time to be preparing your tax return. And April 15th is just around the corner. So if you have not filed yet and need some help, here are a few suggestions.

There is a local organization called VITA, (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) that provides free help to those needing assistance to prepare their tax return. The service is available if you earn less than $55,000 annually and they can help determine if you are eligible for Earned Income Tax Credit as well as Child Tax Credits.

The San Antonio locations are listed on the link above and that provides office hours and further details. The VITA offices are open through April 15, 2013 and if you need more information about this service, call United Way at 210 222 2975.

Remember to collect and bring all your documents and forms, bring drivers license, Social Security card, W-2 forms and any other financial information to help with your tax preparation.

The VITA Coalition is a group of public and private partners dedicated to helping families with financial issues. The volunteers provide free tax assistance. Last year they operated 23 sites across the city and completed over 35,000 tax returns. This service translates into refunds for San Antonio citizens and a valuable service to our community.

Some of the local corporate sponsors include; Frost Bank, NuStar, Security Service Federal Credit Union, USAA, HEB and Valero.

No one likes the tax process but it is good to know that you can get help. Don't delay and note that you can even schedule an appointment to review prior year or amended tax returns by calling 210 431 7541.

Thanks to all the volunteers.
