According to CBC Sports, Canadian Olympian John Tavares of the New York Islanders will be out for the remainder of the 2013-14 National Hockey League season after suffering an injury to his medial collateral ligament in Canada's 2-1 victory over Latvia in the men's quarterfinals of the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi.
Tavares led the Islanders with 24 goals, 42 assists and 66 points. The injury is a huge blow to an Islanders squad who is 12 points back of the Detroit Red Wings for a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.
The injury to Tavares is also damaging to a Team Canada squad that is trying to defend their gold medal in men's hockey from the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver. Canada will be playing the United States in semi-final action on Friday.
The Tavares injury also strengthens the National Hockey League's argument of hesitancy of participating at future Olympic Winter Games.
