According to the Canadian Press, Canadian Olympian John Tavares of Mississauga, Ontario was named the National Hockey League's first star of the week from January 6-12, 2014.

In four games for the New York Islanders this past week, Tavares notched four goals and six assists for ten points. Five of those points came in one game, as Tavares recorded three goals and two assists in a 7-3 victory over the Dallas Stars on January 6.

Tavares was also very defensively responsible as he was also a +9 over that time. Tavares was also chosen as one of the 14 forwards to represent Team Canada at the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi.

Goaltender Jonas Hiller of the Anaheim Ducks was named the NHL's second star, while fellow goaltender Henrik Lundqvist of the New York Rangers was named the NHL's third star. Hiller will represent Switzerland in men's hockey at the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi, while Lundqvist will represent Sweden.
