Being a tattoo artist isn't easy. It takes a lot of work, skill, and talent to get to be a respectable artist. As a result, some artists won't shy away from any job given them; regardless of whether the client may regret it in the near future. Many people have the names of significant others that they are no longer with inked on their skin. Young people have had a trend of getting tattoos on their face, neck, or hands which can limit job opportunities later in life. Also, there is the risk of just not getting a new tattoo and having to spend further money in getting the artwork either removed or touched up sometime down the road.
For artist Megan Massacre--star of TLC's "NY Ink" and "America's Worst Tattoos"--making sure that her clients have a tattoo they love is the most important thing to her. When couples come in saying the want to have each other's names tattooed on them, she has a conversation with how long they have been together; she is more willing to ink a couple that had been together for 20 years than newlyweds. And if an 18 year old comes in wanting a facial tattoo, she has a talk with them about their plans for their future and how these type of tattoos can be a "job stopper". She also will not tattoo anyone that appears to be intoxicated. On these conversations she is not afraid to tell a client no on a tattoo.
One reason for her reluctance of giving a client a potentially regrettable tattoo is either she or another artist may have to redo it. This can hinder the artists creativity than doing a whole new piece.
Massacre, who has over 25 tattoos herself, is not only an artist but also models for various tattoo magazines.
