Tasting wine on the 25th, in Portland, brings thoughts of a new wine year!

It’s 2013!!! Will this be an amazing vintage year for every single wine you love to drink???!! Sure. Well…

Tasting wine is about finding wines you love, as every year is a new vintage year, and new expressions from many influences the vintner considers,,, And, until the 2013s are released, no one will know for sure how each vintage has performed. It’s quite an adventure!

Speaking of new adventures, we have three videos, all hilarious takes on starting and running a winery! First, the decision to start winery, second buying from a wine sales person, and lastly, a lesson on what wine really means to our earth. Enjoy these! But, if you don’t, watch again!

Sommelier starts a winery “It’s easy, ”Wine Sales 101 Part II “Wine sales people are known degenerates,” Sommelier learns about HR 1161 “Saving America’s Children”

Here’s this week’s slate of opportunities. Updates will be made so check back for complete information. Remember, taste wine safely! It’s the Oregon way!

Beth from Grape Expectation Wine Group pours great value deals...
"Apremont" Jean Perrier 2011 Vin de Savoie $12.99 dry white France

Made with the jacquere grape, this fresh light wine has a delicate minerality – its aroma is like a breeze from freshly rained-upon stones. The palate is a similarly delicate play of lemon squeezed on lightly nuanced orchard fruit, finishing crisply tender-dry. It contains only 11.5 percent alcohol and is a great aperitivo. This is a great companion to fish, especially shellfish, goat cheese appetizers, simply-prepared roast chicken, and of course coming from Savoie, a perfect match for fondue.
Tinto da Anfora 2009 Portuguese Red $9.99 dry red
Racy and piquant, this little red will remind you of a highly aromatic Bordeaux cabernet franc.
Brandborg Pinot Noir 2009 $17.99 "Benchlands" Umpqua Valley Oregon dry red
Perhaps Oregon's finest value pinot noir producer is not in the Willamette Valley?
Bouza -Tannat from Uruguay $16.99

Tannat is the grape variety that gives backbone to the great wines of Madiran in France, and this version is a revelation to lovers of big broad reds, with its big but smooth tannic structure.

Plus a few more selections TBA.....

OREGON PINOT NOIR ($15)

Friday, January 25th/ 4- 7:30 @ Mt.Tabor Fine Wines

”After a traumatic vacation I’m glad to be back to normalcy and our regular routine of excellent Friday tastings. What better way to start off the 2013 season than with our very own Pinots.

"What a great opportunity to taste Oregon Pinot history in the Eyrie, you read correctly, 2000 Marguerite. Evidently, 2000 was one of Eyrie founder/ legend David Lett’s favorite all time vintages. It so happened that his granddaughter, Marguerite, was born that year and to honor that birth he made a special bottling for her from the best vines in Eyrie’s impressive stable.

"Unfortunately, David left us a few years ago but his son, Jason, now in charge, has decided the time is now to release this beautiful wine. His daughter, Marguerite, at the age of 12, painted the beautiful watercolor label for the bottling. So I guess you could say this wine has come full circle. But on to the wine. Wow!

"This is a great example of what Oregon Pinot can become with minimal intervention winemaking and a few years in the bottle. Lett’s wines were never showy when young but with time, like great Burgundies, they develop nuance and complexity that very few others can achieve.

"Steve Goff is one of my favorite people in winemaking and you may have met him at our recent anniversary party. He’s the winemaker for Colene Clemens and this is his first bottling under his own name. He purchased some fruit from the Shea vineyard and has made a very pretty wine in the style of the 2010 vintage. The lineup is a strong one and I encourage you all to come and enjoy.”

Now, onto the wine at hand, which has me looking forward to leftovers already! Oh, France’s Rhone Valley and Provence, how many ways can you make me fall in love with you all over again? Well, in this instance eight. Once again I am more than thrilled to be able to show off some staggeringly good red wine from one of the tastiest, most beautiful and inspiring places on this wine making planet. I’ve gone on and on in the past about these. How they deliver astonishing value at every price level, how incredibly food friendly they are. Character up the wazoo. Case in point, take the bonus-bonus, the 2010 Autard Chateauneuf. A classic red from a great producer in a fabulous vintage with all the critical acclaim you could want. $42 a pop isn’t cheap, I know, but you put this up against virtually any other $40-$50 wine in the world and it’ll blow them away. And that holds true when you comparatively shop the other seven bottles we’ll be showing. So yes, now that you ask, I am very excited about tomorrow. Here’s why….
