Tasting Beer by Randy Mosher

A book and a beer: 2 reasons to be thirsty!

Randy Mosher is a beer enthusiast, brewer, food guy, collector, graphic designer, beer judge and an all around good guy to hang out and drink beer with.  His long awaited new book is out.  It’s called Tasting Beer, (Story Publishing, 2009).  In summary: Buy this book.  It’s a winner.

Whoever thought tasting beer could be so fun. Chicagoan Randy Mosher is a beer kind of guy extraordinaire.  His new book is something to get very thirsty about.   Chapters include:

  • The Story of Beer
  • Beer and Brewing jargon
  • Beer Qualities
  • Tasting, Judging, Evaluating
  • Beer Presentation
  • Food and Beer
  • Beer Style discussion
  • Beers of Belgium
  • Craft Beer of America
  • And more

Randy is also the author of Radical Brewing and a graphic designer.  There is nothing boring about this book.  Every page is visually appealing with thirst inducing illustrations, photos and other design oriented graphics.  It’s easy to pick up and retire for the duration of a couple of pints.

So grab yourself a better beer.   Turn to any page and read a paragraph.  You’re captured.  If you are into beer at any level; drinker, brewer, enthusiast – you’ll enjoy this read.

As it says on the cover, “Randy is a true beer evangelist… he is saving souls one pint at a time.”

I randomly opened 10 pages and this is what caught my eye:

  1. 1986- 1995 Notes on selected “vintages” of Thomas Hardy Ale
  2. Beer color chart and explanation
  3. Laws, taxes and beer styles
  4. Sensory vocabulary of hop bitterness
  5. “May you have bread that doesn’t crumble and beer that doesn’t go sour.”  Ebers Papyrus, 1552
  6. Send it back – no one expects you to drink bad beer
  7. Pouring for great foam
  8. Classic Trappist breweries and their ales
  9. No brainer – no fail beer and cheese pairings
  10. Historical beer drinking vessels.
