Stepping into Canela we found ourselves transported to Spain with sun drenched walls and intricate designs, a contrast from the San Francisco neighborhood we left behind. We gazed over the wine list noting the offering of Spanish wines but immediately settled on Cava, Spain’s version of champagne. We were greeted with a shot of Pear Gaspacho that was bold and refreshing, a great start to the evening's culinary adventure.
Having recently visited Barcelona we were excited to indulge in Spanish cuisine. Chef Mat Schuster prepared a special assortment of tapas based on our preferences. We began with Croquetas, filled with béchamel and jamon that were savory and satisfying followed by Garlicy Gambas that were spicy and delicious; we probably could have made a meal of these but the tapas kept coming.
The Piquillo peppers were filled with roasted boar and mushroom, cooked to perfection they practically melted in our mouth. A Chicken stew in a rich sauce was succulent and mouthwatering while the lamb riblets with roasted potatoes were flavorful. Moorish Lamb kebobs were next, tender and infused with spices. Just when we thought we couldn't hold another bite the Albondigas (pork meatballs) arrived and we had to sample them. They were tasty but not heavy with a sauce that contained a hint of cinnamon.
For dessert we couldn't resist the Churros served with chocolate dipping sauce. They were so light and fluffy, like eating a cloud sprinkled with cinnamon and chocolate, that we found ourselves devouring them. Our meal was so delicious, satisfying all of our senses at once.
Canela recently celebrated their 2nd anniversary and it is easy to see why. The service is attentive and the food is delicious, enjoyed in a beautiful setting evoking memories of Spain.
