On December 17, 2009, join Trio Restaurant in Narragansett for an exciting coast to coast culinary celebration. Menu highlights:
During the evening, Paul Puhalla, of E & J Gallo Winery, will present wines from several of the most noteworthy vineyards in Sonoma. For the opening toast, the 2007 Mac Murray Ranch Pinot Gris will offer a crisp yet mouthwatering compliment to the Chef’s hors’doeuvers, which will include carrot ginger bisque; crab polenta cake; and prosciutto and cannellini bean crostini. Wines from the legendary Frei Brothers and Louis M. Martini will add another touch of elegance to the courses of braised pork belly with Georges Bank scallops, tuna puttanesca, and braised short ribs. To conclude the festive evening, the creamy goat-cheese cake with blackberry gelato will be paired with the zesty berry zing of the Rancho Zabaco Zinfandel, which comes from Sonoma’s famous Dry Creek Valley or “Zin Zone.” See slide show at end for full details.

These wines, all Gallo, are mediocre wines at best. They are badly overpriced but pushed hard by distributors because they a key account for Johnson Brothers. 22 Bowens, which is part of Newport Harbor Corp has some serious buying power and we have frankly a corperate wine dinner. These will be the only wine dinners left to the general public.
Yes, it is true that only restaurants can sponsor their own events since the DBR has stopped promotional partnerships with retailers and restaurants. Now the consumer can no longer try wines from the vineyards that only retail stores carry. For more details, see story on "State puts a cork in retailers' wine dinners." On the retail side, small stores must find a new way to keep up with the advertizing power of the big quasi chain-like stores here in RI that are starting to resemble the corporate Bevmos and Total Wine and Mores found elsewhere in the country.
