The family of Travon Martin held a peace march in Miami this weekend and the metaphysical aspects of this event and the death of Travon Martin is significant. Travon Martin was the 17 year old African American teen who was shot and killed in Central Florida almost a year ago. Martin was killed by a Hispanic American George Zimmerman who was the coordinator of a neighborhood watch in the gated community where Martin was visiting his Father. Looking beyond the appearances of this event it is interesting that the young Martin was wearing a hoodie, a type of head covering that closely resembles the type of head covering Jesus is often depicted as wearing. It was reported as raining that day and metaphysically rain represents "that outpouring of Spirit that constantly refreshes and enriches man's developing thoughts." According to Charles Fillmore, "the rain that watereth the earth represents the love of God, which comes into mind when summoned and needed."
Something about Travon Martin raised the suspicions of Zimmerman which ultimately changed many lives on that fateful day. Interestingly, Martin was carrying a pack of skittles which could metaphorically represent the colors of the human race, its packaging our universe. Perhaps that package of sweet candy Martin was carrying also represents the harmonious type of co-existence we were sent here to live. Beneath the hard exterior of humaness is a sweetness just waiting to emerge. Skittles are a brand of candy colorful candy whose theme is "taste the rainbow". The community in which the incident happened was representative of that rainbow. The crime watch was established to prevent intruders from entering, did it also prevent love and understanding from flourshing due to a fear of the unknown? That metaphysical rainbow exists throughout the World. It also exists within each of us. Can you taste that rainbow? Is it sweet? Or does it carry a bitter after taste...
Ironically young Martin was also in possession of Arizona iced tea. Arizona is a state that has been mired in controversy over its immigration laws. Those laws were deemed discriminatory by many and sparked a national boycott of that state. According to Wikipedia, "after the passage of Arizona SB1070, a controversial anti-illegal immigration measure, many businesses associated with the state of Arizona faced protests and boycotts. A tongue-in-cheek post to Twitter calling Arizona Iced Tea "the drink of Fascists" fueled reports of a boycott of Arizona-brand beverages. In reaction to this, the company posted to its Twitter account that "Arizona is and always has been a NY based company!"
The Travon Martin incident sparked controversy over another law, Florida’s "stand your ground" law is also being examined.
The ultimate laws are not man-made. The ultimate laws are that of love and peace. While Travon Martin is no longer here physically, his untimely death may be yet another catalyst for the expression of love and peace in our lives. Is it possible to coexist peacefully in this life time? When confronted with a difficult decision or fear the reaction should always come from a place of love. According to the Course in Miracles there exists only love or fear. We need more love.
The Travon Martin Peace March is another call to action. Actor Jamie Foxx attended the March in Miami and voiced his concern of peace and equality. He has also been seen in a Travon Martin t-shirt at the 2012 BET Awards.
We are one and everywhere there are signs and opportunities for healing as a community.
The trial is set to begin later this year.
This is just one metaphysical perspective. What is yours?
