In search of a neighborhood spot that wasn't too close to the crowded nightmare that Rodeo Drive can be at times, Examiner Charles Ryan happened upon Tarte Tatin Bakery on the corner of Olympic and Oakhurst this past weekend.
Somewhat hidden from view in a small strip mall on the NE corner of the intersection; what it lacks in physical stature, it certainly makes up for with simple, delicious, food and a clientele consisting mainly of Beverly Hills residents. Why is the 'neighborhood' element important? Because sometimes it can be a bit hard finding a place that is not geared more towards tourists than locals, or isn't simply overrun with crowds in general.
On site one can buy homemade jams, confections, biscotti, and other deliciousness. Simple ingredients - very tasty. The food? A definite Mediterranean vibe can be found in the menu. Think roasted vegetables, feta, hummus, eggplant. Like their retail goods, the food is simple. That's what makes it amazing. It doesn't ooze the pretentiousness that other small bakeries in town can have. It also never has a line down the block. Just a steady stream of people from around the area - and the reviews show it.
- The egg salad sandwich (the best!)
- Smoked salmon sandwich
- Their tea selection
- Tarte tatin - of course.
